I am a person who loves to talk. Happy, sad, tickled pink or mad as a wet hen, talking is my therapy. When something is on my heart, I want to talk about it. So when I’m upset or frustrated, what do I do? I seek out someone to talk to. Depending on who I get to listen to my rants, sometimes it makes me feel better and sometimes it makes me feel worse.
Over the years, I’ve realized that running to find someone to talk to is not the best way for me to get relief. I’ve finally come to the understanding that talking to God first is the best step to take. Now I practice the habit of praying about it first. When I pray to God to help me with my struggle, peace comes much quicker and easier than when I choose to “fix” it myself. The trying to “fix” it usually results in me not really get over the issue but just continuing to wallow in it.
The beautiful thing is God knows me and how I enjoy of talking and having conversations with friends. So when I’m upset, stressed, or worried and I give it to Him, what does He do? Many times, He blesses me with someone to talk to that can help me during my trials. So what’s the difference in me finding someone to talk to or letting God provide the person for me? God knows exactly who I need to listen to me. For me finding the right person to fill that role is a shot in the dark and never a success. Whether God blesses me with a friend to talk to or finds other ways to bring me peace, He is always faithful to provide comfort to me. So coming to God for my help brings forth many more blessings than I could ever imagine.
For this week, when you feel frustrated about something and want to vent about it to a friend – stop for a moment and say a prayer about it. Ask God to help you overcome your frustration with it. Ask God to comfort you. He may choose to comfort you in surprising ways and it may even be to connect you with a friend to help strengthen you about that specific situation.
Allow God the opportunity to strengthen you in His way rather than trying to “fix” it yourself by turning to a person. Give it to God and trust in Him to get you through it.
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
