30 Days of Thanks – Day 12

The other evening, Cecily was over and made a comment about how she had forgotten how noisy our house is. Our house usually generates quite a bit of noise with three people in it. If I am alone, I normally turn on the TV or play music for the noise factor. I’ve always done this. Over the weekend, I told a friend about Cecily’s comment which prompted a conversation about why I’m drawn to noise and why she lives in a quiet environment. I expressed that when it’s quiet my mind seems to be overloaded with many thoughts and I use noise to distract me from getting fixated on an anxious thought.

This whole conversation got me to think more about the quiet. Do I like the quiet? While most of the time, I prefer some background noise, I do prefer quiet during my bible study time and especially my prayer time. I also find I enjoy the short time of quiet that my mornings bring.

While a big portion of my day I choose to fill with noise, I do enjoy quiet moments. I enjoy those times when the quiet actually does calm my mind, because it’s when I can focus my mind and heart on the Lord. It is during the quiet that I talk to God and fill my heart with His peace. So today I give thanks for the quiet, because it’s in the quiet where I draw closer to God.

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8

“Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.” Mark 1:35

“So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.” Luke 5:16

“And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.”
Matthew 14:23

Until next time,
