Eve – Women of Faith

The discussion for today covers the first woman, Eve. When thinking of Eve, the first thing to come to most peoples’ minds involves her biggest moment of weakness. Eve’s weak moment in the garden caused sin to enter the world, but despite this moment, she offers an example worthy of being called a woman of faith.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.’ Genesis 1:27-30

Eve had everything she needed, but lost it all with one bite. She went from a life of no fears, worries or pain to a world of shame, guilt, and heartache. When reading the story of Eve the faithfulness of God is apparent. When you dig more in the book of Genesis you read about Eve’s example of faith.

When Eve discovered she was naked, she tried to cover herself because she was ashamed. ‘Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.’ Genesis 3:7. Just like we try to hide from God today, Adam and Eve found themselves trying to hide from God for the first time. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Genesis 3:8 Adam and Eve suddenly knew it was wrong to be naked. Although they hid from God, they also tried to make things right by making covering for themselves. Of course, God provided them with better covering. ‘The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.’ Genesis 3:20-21

In the story, it’s easy to see the important lesson about the devastation caused by sin. In Eve’s punishment, she lost her perfect home and perfect marriage. Eventually she received the devastating blow of the death of her son Abel at the hands of her other eldest son, Cain. We can’t begin to comprehend the feelings of Eve, because this all happened after her choice to eat the forbidden fruit. Imagine dealing with the guilt of being responsible for this devastation.

While we only know a few things about Eve after she left the garden, we do know she remembered that God was the source of all the good in her life. We know that Eve continued to receive God’s patience, love and kindness. She knew her blessings came from God and she continued to offer Him gratitude. ‘And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.’ Genesis 4:25.

Eve deserves to be considered a woman of faith because of her steadfastness in understanding God’s power and her penitent heart after sinning. She offers a wonderful lesson of God’s redemption, love, and forgiveness.

I want to give a special thank you to my sweet husband, Joe for his help with this article. Since I’ve been dealing with a head cold for a few days, it’s caused some brain fog. Joe was kind enough to help me with clarifying my thoughts, editing, and proofing. Thank you Joe. I hope everyone enjoyed the combined thoughts of Joe and me.

Until next time
