Jochebed – Women of Faith

Today we read about the story of Jochebed, mother of Moses, Aaron and Miriam. Jochebed’s story can be read in Exodus 2:1-10 and Exodus 6:20.

While she may not receive the same attention of women like Sarah, Ruth, Esther, or Mary- mother of Jesus, she represented a profound faith and trust in God. Jochebed is a notable woman of faith that’s referred to in Hebrews ‘By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.’ (11:23)

Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank. And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.” Exodus 2:1-10

Jochebed chose to hide Moses and place him in the river took impressive faith and courage. I would be so afraid of being caught, but we read she was not afraid of the king’s decree in the book of Hebrews. And when she could no longer hide him, she got creative. Not only does she craft a boat for her precious baby, but she instructed his sister Miriam to keep an eye on him. What inspiring faith Jochebed had in the Lord! She trusted He would take care of her children.

Before reading this account, you may not have known who Jochebed was. The account of her heroic act of protecting Moses from death does not even mention her name. No, we don’t learn the name of the mother of Moses until chapter 6 of Exodus in the genealogy listing. ‘Amram took as his wife Jochebed his father’s sister, and she bore him Aaron and Moses, the years of the life of Amram being 137 years.” Exodus 6:20

Jochebed’s brave act does not go unnoticed in history. Because she chose to save her baby from death, God was able to use Moses to end the destruction of the nation of God’s people and release them from Egyptian bondage. So whether we know her name or not, we can learn from the wisdom, sacrifice, courage and ingenuity in her act of faith.

Until next time
