Just Be Nice

This other day, my son, Colton said “Hey, Mom, I’ve got an idea for your blog. ‘Just be nice.’ I’ve been trying to talk nicer to dad and I noticed he’s talking nicer to me”. So from Colton’s suggestion, I’m going to talk about being nice.

Sounds simple enough – Just Be Nice, but for some reason, it’s not all that easy. For instance, when I’m tired or stressed I can be very short and snippy with people, specifically my family. If I’m worrying about something or have something on my mind, I don’t always speak nicely to my husband. Actually, my words can be pretty harsh.
My kids know the brunt of my moodiness very well. They know when mom is frazzled from too much stuff, I may get fussy with them and complain about the messy room or leaving their stuff around the house. Even my son-in-law, Parker has witnessed the not so pleasant side of me getting flustered because I’m feeling out of control.

So yeah, just be nice doesn’t always happen. Honestly, I’m not sure I could accomplish to just be nice always, but I could try harder at doing it more often.

When I think about being nice, my first thought goes to the golden rule.
“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12
That’s what Colton did. He decided to speak nice to his dad hoping it would help his dad speak nicer to him and it worked.

I will admit, though, I have not nurtured living by the golden rule as much as I should. So I thought about ways I can be nicer to people and not let my ugly side rear it’s head so much. Here’s what I’m going to do.

Pray about it. The bible tells me to ‘Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.’ Matthew 7:7 So, I’m adding ‘be nice’ to my prayer list.

Worry less, appreciate more. ‘do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.’ Philippians 4:6
Now this one will be harder for me, but remembering to pray about things stressing me can help me in multiple ways. Appreciating more and worrying less will help me have a better attitude, which will help me be nicer.

Serve others. ‘As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:’ 1 Peter 4:10 . I have to be careful with this and not get too busy trying to do for others, but I can do something small. It may even be as simple as sending a card or sending some encouragement to someone on Facebook. There are ways to serve without overwhelming myself.

Think good thoughts. ‘Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.’ Philippians 4:8 A few years ago my daughter mentioned this verse to me and how she wanted to practice changing her thoughts so she could be more positive, so I’m going to follow her example and strive to be more positive.

So, my goal is to follow my son’s lead and ‘just be nice’ and hopefully I will get some niceness in return.

give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

Luke 6:38

Until next time

Lots of love to you and yours
